Dan Mills (England)
An A to Z of Team Taylor
Dan Mills (England)
Taylor Bowls – the oldest and best Bowls manufacturer and distributor of top-qualify products in the business which will help further my own potential within the game and will so hopefully lead to more and more competitive success.
Which model(s)/size of Taylor bowls do you enjoy playing with and why?
Taylor Ace Size 3 Heavy (indoors) / Taylor International Size 3 Heavy (outdoors). Whilst the Taylor Ace is an overall all-round bowl ideal for all bowling conditions, the Taylor International has slightly more bias which can therefore be used on the generally more challenging outdoor greens to good effect.
What country/region/club/team do you play for?
England / Norfolk / Norwich / County Arts BC
When and why did you start playing bowls?
I started playing bowls in the summer of 2008 when I was 11 years old with the primary interest coming from school where the local bowls club in the village where I lived advertised a junior club on Saturday mornings which I went along to with a couple of friends and started to bowl socially. When the indoor season was coming up, again they had a junior club on Friday nights and the same friends and I went along to this and continued to enjoy something different. A couple of seasons of this elapsed, and then with increasing ability, competitive games were offered to me from around the age of 13 and the rest is history.
Are there any particular stories/incidents you would like to tell us about that relate to your bowling?
Nothing particularly interesting, apart from flying jacks into outdoor bushes when bowlers were firing and heading to small village greens with no actual ditches, hence the jack in the hedge and from there, the hunt to find it!
In the bowling world who do you most admire and why?
I admire several people within bowls – the common icon for most is perhaps Alex Marshall MBE, one of the most successful bowlers of all time alongside Andy Thomson MBE, one of the longest-serving champions of our sport and a fellow Team Taylor member. The first bowler I remember watching and admiring was Greg Harlow at Potters in 2010 winning the World Championship and is now their Bowls Ambassador – I have also got to know Greg a little over time which is great. Competing in Norfolk has also allowed me to play with Mervyn King, such a naturally talented bowls player and a local hero, as well as the legend of John Ottaway, a fantastic representative for his country over the years particularly in refining the art of playing lead to such a high level.
Do you have a favourite – film, book, song, football team, actor, etc? It can be more than one if you like.
Favourite film – Pulp Fiction, with Quentin Tarantino a genius in film-making.
Favourite actor – Anthony Hopkins, with his performance as Hannibal Lecter in The Silence of the Lambs being renowned.
Favourite football team – West Ham United, inherited through my mother who grew up close-by in East London.
Favourite comedian – Robin Williams, an absolute prodigy who left the world far too early.
Favourite TV series – Line of Duty, with the investigations into police corruption compelling viewing and you are often left wanting more.
